GridNet is a helper application which is designed to take the hard work out of finding or reporting a grid reference anywhere in the UK. At its most basic you can simply move the mouse around the screen and read directly from the Grid Reference panel to the left of the map the grid reference resolution which you feel is most suited.

GridNet is based on Bing Maps from Microsoft and include the OS Explorer (1:25000) and Landranger (1:50000) products.

The GridSquare layer is a simple thing which just follows the pointer around the screen highlighting the actual grid square - the resolution is chosen through the radio buttons in the Grid Reference panel. The AutoGrid layer displays a British National Grid overlay at a resolution suitable for the zoom level of the current map view.

Right clicking on the map brings up a context menu which allows you to 'freeze' the Grid Reference and make it easy to then copy and paste this into any document.

The Map Tools are a group of general map navigation buttons which allow you to freely move around the map. Hovering the mouse over each button gives a brief description of what it does. I find the easiest way to find a location is generally typing in either the postcode, a known grid reference or a placename and clicking the Go To Location button. If all else fails, try clicking the UK Extent button and centere the map where you (roughly) want to zoom to, followed by the OS Landranger button. This should give you a wide area with enough detail to centre the exact area, and then click on the OS button for greater detail.
