JS GIS is a simple GIS sytem set up to record spatial information for projects.

The help system is divided into sections corresponding to the actual headings seen in the Map Controls above. Click on the required 'help' heading below for an explanation of how to use the controls in that section.

The visible map is selected from the drop down box at the top of the section. Available maps are listed when you click on the down arrow. The currently selected map is always shown in the box.

• GridSquare - highlights the Grid Square as the mouse moves over the map. The size of this square is determined by selection of the appropriate radio button within the Grid Reference panel.
• AutoGrid - This is a self-adjusting grid which displays over the current map and is based on the British National Grid. The display of coordinates is toggled using the checkbox which is available when the '+' button to the left of the layer name ('AutoGrid') is expanded.

The check boxes indicate the display state of each layer.

• Checked - the layer is visible.
• Unchecked - the layer is hidden.

This is a report panel which displays the Grid Reference in a number of resolutions. If there is insufficient detail to determine a higher resolution grid reference then the Grid Reference at that resolution will not be displayed.

Displays linear and area measurements by selection of the appropriate radio button.

• line - display linear distance at each mouse click
• polygon - display area covered at each mouse click

• Pan Map - displays a drag cursor and allows the user to drag the map to a different location by clicking and dragging the mouse.
• Zoom In - displays a crosshair cursor and allows zooming to an area by clicking and dragging over the area of interest. A single click on the map in this mode will zoom in by 1 level. features.
• Zoom Out - displays a crosshair cursor and allows zooming from an area by clicking and dragging over the area of interest. A single click on the map in this mode will zoom out by 1 level. features.

• Full Extent - zooms to maximum extent and centres the map to fit into the full map window.
• Previous Extent - returns to previous map view in the map history list. This is specific to the map layer and switching maps will erase the map history.
• Next Extent - moves to next map view in the map history list up to the most recent view. This is specific to the map layer and switching maps will erase the map history.

• Set Default View - sets the current map view as the default view to load when you next visit this page. Cookies need to be enabled for this to work.
• Go To Default View - goes to the map view saved using the 'Set Default View' button.
• Bookmark This View - Allows a list of different map views to be saved to the Favourites/Bookmark folder for convenience.
• Print This View - prints out the current map view.

Searches for location (placename or part placename, 'Earlsferry' or 'Earlsf'), postcode (full or partial, 'AB12' or 'AB12 3AB') or grid reference. The map zooms to a default level with the search location centred.

The placename search returns a list of places and this is displayed immediately below the 'Go To Location' button.
